    This universal professional portal milling machine, built with stability in mind, forms the link between our small, precise High-Z CNC milling machine and the large RaptorX-SL XXL CNC router. Stable, precise, solidly built – top quality down to the last detail.

    Best Choice for Sheet Materials

    Milling wood, wood panels, chipboard, PVC sheets, other plastics, and various non-ferrous metals can be carried out just as precisely with this machine as text engraving. The loading aid, consisting of ball rollers on one side of the machine, makes it easier to insert large sheets of material, for example.

    Ball Screw for Significant Ease of Maintenance

    The ball screw drive on the Z-axis of the portal milling machine impresses as another advantage with significant ease of maintenance. The Z-axis is equipped as standard with a ball screw spindle measuring 25 mm with a pitch of 5 mm. With central lubrication, you have the option of manually or automatically oiling the spindle.

    Performance Increase Through Rack-and-Pinion Drive

    Another advantage, especially for large systems, is the absence of inert mass. Inert mass, such as a heavy ball screw, must first be set in motion by the drive motor, which reduces performance. This drawback is completely eliminated with the rack-and-pinion drive.

    Optional Z-Axis Travel of 300 mm or 400 mm

    The T-Rex portal milling machine can also be configured in terms of travel and clearance height according to your specific needs. Standard travel is 300 mm with a clearance of 200 mm. Optionally, we offer 400 mm travel with a clearance of 300 mm.     Massive Construction for Vibration Damping

    The newly designed heavy machine bed of the T-Rex series efficiently counteracts the difficult issue of vibration damping. We deliberately use components with oversized wall thicknesses, usually only found in stone-processing machines. This results in up to 18% higher dissipation of vibrations into the machine bed, vibrations that would otherwise lead to poor surface finishes.

    Fast Travel Speeds – Up to 32,000 mm per Minute

    With rapid speeds of up to approx. 15,000 mm/min with the closed-loop version and up to approx. 32,000 mm/min with the servo version, this machine type is efficient for milling, engraving, and cutting work in trade and industry.

    Closed-Loop or Servo CNC Router with HF Spindle and Automatic Tool Changer

    Our T-Rex CNC portal milling machines with closed-loop motors or servo motors are each available in 10 different sizes and are individually configurable. You can choose between air-cooled or water-cooled high-frequency spindles, with or without an automatic tool change system. We offer tool change stations with 4 to 12 tool holders, depending on machine size. The travel remains unchanged by these options.

    If you decide to retrofit an automatic tool changer later, this is possible but will reduce travel length.

    Servo Motor Router with Precision Racks and Planetary Gears

    On the servo version of the T-Rex, the X- and Y-axes use helical racks with gears. This design allows faster travel speeds, as higher torque can be transmitted. In addition, there are no vibrations like those found with long ball screws.

    Depending on your application, different HF spindles can be selected. For example:

    Automatic Central Lubrication Included

    Automatic central lubrication is a standard feature on T-Rex machines, making work easier and saving personnel costs while ensuring efficient use of lubricants. Intervals can be programmed, so no repeated checks are necessary.

    Zone Vacuum Table – Standard Equipment

    The working surface of the portal milling machine can be customized according to your needs. As standard, the T-Rex comes with a zone vacuum table with T-slot rails. Alternatively, a full T-slot clamping option is available.

    You can also combine both – for example, one half with T-slot plates and the other with vacuum table. Depending on the application, the appropriate clamping method is used.

    Optional accessories include an oil-free vacuum pump or side channel blower. Each vacuum table zone can be switched on/off individually via levers or optionally via a front control panel. Depending on machine size, vacuum pumps from 2.2 kW to 7.5 kW are available.

    Manual or Pneumatic Dust Extraction

    The optional dust extraction shoe can be manually adjusted or pneumatically controlled and keeps the work surface clean. Pneumatic control is handled directly via the KinetiC-NC software, allowing the shoe to lower or lift automatically. A surrounding brush strip adapts to any workpiece shape. The hose connects to your existing vacuum system; optional extraction units are also available. This saves significant cleaning time after machining.

    Protective Bellows and Energy Chains

    Bellows protect the linear guides, carriages, and racks on the X- and Y-axes, while the massive steel frame ensures durability. Closed energy chains keep cables tidy and safe from external influences.

    Ergonomic Control Terminal with Full HD Monitor and PC

    Every T-Rex machine comes with an ergonomic control terminal with a Full HD monitor and PC. The included wireless keyboard and mouse allow you to work comfortably at standing height. The angled design ensures the screen is easily visible.

    Design of a Gantry Milling Machine

    As the name suggests, a gantry milling machine refers to a specific type of milling machine design. In this case, the X-axis (bridge) represents the width of the machine, the Y-axis represents the length, and the Z-axis is the vertical axis. Together, these form what is known as a gantry. Some gantry milling machines or wood routers feature multiple milling heads on the Z-axis, in addition to the milling head on the X-bridge, allowing simultaneous processing of different sides in a single step.

    The workpiece to be machined is either clamped onto a movable work table that moves within the gantry according to the desired cutting path, or onto a stationary work table that is traversed by the gantry machine carriage.     In some machines, the bridge is moved along the X-axis by a centrally positioned ball screw spindle located beneath the table.     Thanks to modern CAD/CAM software—CAD meaning computer-aided design and CAM meaning computer-aided manufacturing—it is possible to transfer almost any shape, whether 2D, 2.5D, or 3D, to the machine as data sets, usually in the form of DIN ISO G-codes. The machine then processes these data step by step until the workpiece has been machined according to your specifications.

    When it comes to selecting the right control software, a knowledgeable salesperson should provide advice. The same principle applies here:

    The T-Rex from CNC-STEP is designed for high-precision machining of a wide variety of materials. Besides plastics like PVC and all types of wood-based materials (e.g. chipboard, hardwood), it can process various metals. It also allows precise engravings on materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, or Plexiglas. In addition, it is used successfully by some customers to machine natural stones like marble, soapstone, or slate.

    It features an exceptionally robust design aimed at maximum precision and durability. The use of particularly stable components with oversized material thicknesses (comparable to stone-processing machines) allows for highly effective vibration absorption. This results in improved surface finish and consistently high precision even under challenging milling conditions. In addition, the torsion-rigid, fully welded steel frame with additional braces provides exceptional stability, reducing deformation even under heavy loads.     Yes. Standard Z-axis travel is 200 mm. For tasks requiring higher clearance, versions with 300 mm or up to 400 mm Z-axis travel are available. This flexibility allows the machine to be tailored to specific machining requirements, whether for thick materials or high fixtures.

    Yes. The CNC portal milling machine is available in several standard sizes and can also be custom-designed in larger dimensions. Eight different machine sizes are available from stock. Thanks to its robust construction, custom sizes up to 4,000 × 12,000 mm can be manufactured. The T-Rex series provides a stable and precise intermediate solution between smaller high-precision machines (like High-Z) and the large-format RaptorX-SL machines.

    It features a powerful industrial PC with a modern processor to ensure smooth, high-speed control. The construction software ConstruCAM-3D and the control software KinetiC-NC come pre-installed, making the machine ready for operation from the outset. The Windows operating system is available in both German and English for a familiar user experience.

    Plug-&-Play means the machine arrives fully configured, often fully assembled, and ready to use immediately. All relevant hardware and software components are pre-installed, so no elaborate setup or cabling is required. The system includes an industrial operator terminal with monitor, with both KinetiC-NC control software and ConstruCAM-3D design software ready to run—so you can begin machining right after setup.
